High Temperature Symmetry Nonrestoration
نویسنده
چکیده
Naively one expects that at low temperature a system has less symmetry than at high temperature. However, there are cases in nature, where the opposite happens. This phenomenon is called inverse symmetry breaking. A very similar phenomenon is symmetry nonrestoration at high temperature. It appears when the system has at high T less symmetry than allowed by the Lagrangian, which means that some vev is nonzero. With high temperature we mean temperature higher than any parameter of mass dimension in the Lagrangian. In this short review we will describe some examples of this phenomenon both in nature and in field theory. Due to lack of space many topics will be mentioned only briefly. The interested reader can refer to some other reviews 1 as well as to the original papers.

SUSY and Symmetry Nonrestoration at High Temperature
The status of internal symmetry breaking at high temperature in supersymmetric models is reviewed. This phenomenon could solve some well known cosmological problems, such as the domain wall, monopole and false vacuum problems.
متن کاملOn the CJT Formalism in Multi-Field Theories
The issues that arise when using the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis formalism in multi-field theories are investigated. Particular attention is devoted to the interplay between temperature effects, ultraviolet structure, and the interdependence of the gap equations. Results are presented explicitly in the case of the evaluation of the finite temperature effective potential of a theory with two scala...
متن کاملR-charge Kills Monopoles
Large charge density, unlike high temperature, may lead to nonrestoration of global and gauge symmetries. Supersymmetric GUTs with the appealing scenario of unification scale being generated dynamically naturally contain global continuous R symmetries. We point out that the presence of a large R charge in the early Universe can lead to GUT symmetry nonrestoration. This provides a simple way out...
متن کاملRayleigh-Ritz Variational Approximation and Symmetry Nonrestoration
The investigation of symmetry nonrestoration scenarios has led to a controversy, with certain nonperturbative approximation schemes giving indications in sharp disagreement with those found within conventional perturbation theory. A Rayleigh-Ritz variational approach to the problem, which might be useful in bridging the gap between perturbative and nonperturbative viewpoints, is here proposed. ...
متن کاملA Nonperturbative Study of Inverse Symmetry Breaking at High Temperatures
The optimized linear δ-expansion is applied to multi-field O(N1)×O(N2) scalar theories at high temperatures. Using the imaginary time formalism the thermal masses are evaluated perturbatively up to order δ which considers consistently all two-loop contributions. A variational procedure associated with the method generates nonperturbative results which are used to search for parameters values fo...
